Luminä Exhibition At Tinning Street Presents

It has been 17 months since I completed my residency in Finland. Not a day has passed during which I haven’t thought about that place and the people I met there; about the snow; the frozen lakes and sunsets that lasted hours. And so I’m excited to announce that the exhibition of works that I began whilst there, and contined back home, will finally be opening at the brilliant Tinning Street Presents.

UPDATE:

As the gallery has had to close due to the lockdown in Melbourne, works are available online. A PDF of available works can be seen here. Please get in contact for more photos or information. Payment plans welcome.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

Luminä (a combination of the Finnish words for snow and self), features two different bodies of work: the first, daily self-portraits I did on a residency in Finland in mid-winter. Experimental, varying in length and materials, they display an element of play usually missing from my practice. Some are almost invisible, having been painted with snow, or with the barest addition of watercolour. Others are white oil stick or paint on white paper.

The second is a progressive series of self-portraits in the snowy landscape. Working in my customary silverpoint (drawing with silver and gold), these works explore my - and by extension humanity's relationship - to nature, placing myself in the landscape, slowly dissolving. There is an uncomfortable element introduced by the fully-realised figures being the ones to interact least with the surrounding scenery, initiating questions of our place in nature, the reality of that and the desire for change.
